There are currently 231,597 refugees living in the United Kingdom (Source: UNHCR UK, November 2022) The vast majority have come from countries affected by war and crisis and many have endured persecution, torture, loss and the denial of basic human rights.
Once granted asylum, refugees are often at high risk of homelessness, and are more likely to experience poor mental health, including higher rates of depression, PTSD and other anxiety disorders – often linked to their experiences before and during the asylum seeking process. Asylum seeking children who enter the UK separated from their parents are on average three times behind non-migrant children at school by the time they take their GCSEs
Breaking Barriers helped me. Before my employment advisors, Sam, and then Maria, worked with me, I didn’t know anything about looking for a job, CVs, covering letters, interview skills or anything.
Reem at Breaking Barriers helped me to find a college course, and I’ve just finished my first year in beauty. I’ve also applied for a grant to help fund a make-up course.
Maria, my Employment Advisor, was my breakthrough. She connected me to lots of different organisations and people – some helped me with interview practice, while others helped me to understand different industries.
